Design and Exterior

The Acer Nitro 5 is a testament to strength, with its mysterious black casing and gamer-centric dimensions. Acer claims that this laptop won’t make you stand out unnecessarily, and I agree that it’s not as flashy as Alienware models but is certainly not inconspicuous. Weighing 5.51 pounds with impressive dimensions, the Nitro 5 exudes the essence of a true gaming laptop.

I instantly felt its robustness. Every detail, from the lid to the screen bezels, hinges, and keyboard base, is substantial. Despite its portability, you’ll never forget its presence in your backpack – a constant reminder of the weight of power.

The ports and heat vents are strategically placed around the sides and back, with red accents around the rear vents, adding to its formidable look. The all-black casing of the Nitro 5 offers a sleek and stylish appearance. Acer wasn’t exaggerating when it said this laptop is somewhat discreet – it maintains subtlety while asserting its gaming device status.

The Acer Nitro 5 has a design that balances form and function, perfect for those who value power and durability and are okay with carrying it everywhere.

The Nitro 5 gaming laptop proves to be more than just an option for gamers seeking the thrill of conquering every game. If you’re not fixated on running games at the highest settings, the Nitro 5 offers stable and above-average performance.

My experiences with games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Borderlands 3 on the Nitro 5 were impressive, running smoothly at around 44 to 51 frames per second. This is commendable for a laptop like the Nitro 5. Games like Grand Theft Auto V and Far Cry New Dawn also showcased its strength with impressive frame rates. However, testing with Cyberpunk 2077, notorious for its high system demands, revealed the Nitro 5’s limits, achieving around 30 fps. This was expected as Cyberpunk 2077 poses a real challenge for any system.

Beyond gaming, the Nitro 5 is a reliable work tool. Although its size and design are not ideal for constant mobility, it performs on par with business laptops. When tested with office tasks, the Nitro 5 ran smoothly, showing no lag or delay, even with multiple open tabs and videos playing.

The Nitro 5 impresses not only with its CPU and GPU performance but also with its upgradeable memory capabilities. Equipped with DDR5 RAM, the latest and fastest type available, it ensures fluidity and responsiveness in all tasks. With support for up to 64GB of RAM, the Nitro 5 can handle memory-intensive games and complex multitasking.

The SSD storage of the Nitro 5 also deserves attention. With up to 2TB SSD options, it provides ample storage space for games, applications, and data and ensures quick data access speeds. DDR5 RAM and SSD combine to create a smooth user experience, from system boot-up and application launch to running heavy tasks.

Display & Audio

The user experience with the Acer gaming laptop Nitro 5 starts with its standout feature: the display. The large 15.6-inch screen with a 165Hz refresh rate offers size and delivers smooth images, perfect for speed and precision-oriented gamers. The screen’s color reproduction and contrast are impressive, providing vivid and sharp images, especially in high-graphics games.

Equally important is the audio experience. The integrated stereo speakers of the Nitro 5 surprised me with their lively and detailed sound quality. Whether gaming or watching movies, I could feel the expansive 3D surround proper space, immersing me in the virtual world. However, using headphones is a great option for enhancing the audio experience, allowing me to perceive every sound detail more clearly and realistically.

Overall, the display and sound system of the Acer gaming laptop Nitro 5 has provided me with a top-notch gaming and entertainment experience. The combination of sharp images, vibrant colors, and detailed 3D surround sound turned every moment of usage into a truly impressive and unforgettable experience.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The spacious keyboard on the Acer Nitro 5 provides ample room for comfortable typing. The thicker-than-average keys offer significant bounce when pressed. I’m not a big fan of laptop keyboards as they often feel flimsy compared to the mechanical keyboards I prefer. However, with the Nitro 5, I found the keys solid and comfortable, making it one of the best laptop keyboards I’ve experienced.

The keyboard’s highlight is its 4-zone RGB backlighting system. You can change the backlight colors through the “NitroSense” interface by pressing the NitroSense key on the keyboard. This menu allows you to set colors for each zone on the keyboard, adjust the brightness of the backlight, and choose between static or dynamic backlight modes. If you love RGB lighting, you’ll enjoy this customization. However, if you’re like me and prefer simplicity, you can set the backlight to white and use it as usual.

While the keyboard is large, the touchpad is relatively small. Despite its size, I found the touchpad easy to use and intuitive. It responded well to all my gestures and was a user-friendly, efficient touchpad.

Connectivity Ports

The Acer Nitro 5 offers a variety of ports, enhancing my flexibility in using and connecting to other devices. On the left side, it features an Ethernet port, a USB-A port, a headphone jack, and a Kensington lock for security. On the right side, I found two more USB-A ports, conveniently allowing me to connect multiple devices easily.

Even more impressive is that there’s a Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C port on the back and an HDMI port. This allows me to connect the Nitro 5 to various devices, from external monitors to projectors.

One minor limitation is that the machine has only one USB-C port. This could be inconvenient if I use multiple USB-C devices simultaneously. However, with the prevalence of USB-A devices in the gaming industry, the single USB-C port might not significantly impact my experience.

The webcam on the Acer Nitro 5 is not particularly impressive. With only 720p resolution, it is at the bare minimum. Usually, webcams aren’t a priority on gaming laptops, and users only sometimes use them for online meetings. Under normal lighting conditions, the camera works adequately. If you need to use the camera for work or video calls with friends, it’s sufficient for that purpose.

However, as I mentioned in my Alienware x14 review, if you want to look better in online meetings or when live streaming on Twitch, I recommend using a high-quality webcam like the Logitech C920s Pro HD Webcam.

Battery Life

Gaming laptops are not the best choice for those needing to use the device unplugged. The Nitro 5 is no exception. The laptop lasted about 5 hours and 33 minutes on Tom’s Guide’s battery life test. This included continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi with the screen set at 150 nits of brightness. This duration is comparable to the Alienware x14 but less than the impressive 7 hours and 13 minutes of the Dell G5.

If you’re gaming, the battery life is only enough for about 1 hour and 11 minutes. I tested this myself, and the results were similar. As usual with gaming laptops, it’s best to keep the machine plugged in while gaming.

In our standard temperature test, after running a Full HD video for 15 minutes, the hottest point on the Nitro 5 was on the underside at the rear, reaching a maximum of 94 degrees Fahrenheit. This means the temperature is still within an acceptable range. However, when gaming, the laptop gets much hotter, with temperatures on the underside at the rear reaching 122 degrees while running Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition. This is nearly 20 degrees higher than our comfortable threshold in our tests, so it’s best to keep the Nitro 5 on a desk or flat surface while gaming.

In conclusion, the Acer Nitro 5 is an excellent choice for gamers looking for a powerful gaming laptop with impressive display and audio capabilities. It’s worth considering, especially for those who are more concerned about portability and battery life.
