Design and Exterior

Upon first glance at the ROG Strix G16, I immediately sensed a fresh design perspective from Asus. The 2023 version, with its completely revamped exterior, leaves a profound impression. The aluminum lid conveys strength and solidity, while the rest of the body, made of high-quality plastic, proves that plastic doesn’t have to mean ‘cheap.’

What I especially appreciate is the meticulous attention to detail in the design, resulting in a sleek appearance that’s flashy but not overly so, reflecting a sophisticated and classy style. Unlike some gaming laptops, the ROG Strix G16 doesn’t overdo LED details. Instead, Asus opted for a more minimalist style with slim LED strips, adding just enough flair without detracting from the overall design.

Each aspect of the ROG Strix G16 is purposefully crafted, from material choices to each cut and curve. Everything is carefully balanced, from durability to functionality, creating a laptop that’s beautiful and resilient over time.

The size and weight of the laptop strike a perfect balance: light enough for portability yet substantial enough to feel solid and high-quality. Asus’s decision to balance design and function highlights the ROG Strix G16 in the competitive gaming laptop market.

Performance

Asus Rog Strix g16 Performance

Exploring the Asus ROG Strix G16, I knew I was encountering a performance powerhouse. Equipped with the Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, a marvel with eight high-performance cores and 16 efficiency cores, I was ready for impressive displays. True to expectations, this laptop showcased undeniable power.

Testing with Overwatch 2 at the highest settings yielded a smooth gaming experience at 165 fps, harmoniously syncing with the screen’s 165Hz refresh rate. The experience was a dance of vivid colors and images, with no stutter or lag.

In the performance race against rivals, the ROG Strix G16 excelled in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and performed admirably in other titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Notably, it only showed a slight performance drop when switching from 1080p to 1200p, a significant advantage compared to the performance dip seen in other laptops at 1440p.

The ROG Strix G16 also surprised me with its ability to run Far Cry 6, nearly reaching 100 fps. While it didn’t meet the high expectations of the Aorus 15X in Borderlands 3, it still displayed commendable performance.

DLSS technology in supported games improved performance and rendered sharp image quality, though it sometimes introduced minor lag.

Finally, in the ultimate challenge with Metro Exodus, I was impressed by the laptop’s consistent performance and excellent thermal management. It maintained an average fps of 79.35, with CPU and GPU temperatures within safe limits.

In summary, the Asus ROG Strix G16 is more than just an ordinary gaming laptop; it’s a testament to the relentless advancement of technology, a reliable partner for every gamer and high-performance user.

Display & Audio

Asus Strix G16 has a 16-inch, 16:10 display with a QHD+ IPS or FHD+ IPS panel. This test model has a QHD+ panel. This board is the most popular, as FHD+ is only available on some lower-end configurations. There is a versatile laptop screen with 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, good brightness, decent contrast, and black levels. Its non-glare matte finish makes it perfect for bright or outdoor office spaces.

Furthermore, this panel has a refresh rate of up to 240Hz with a fast response time of 3-7ms GtG. In addition, GSync is also supported on the main screen of ROG 2023 laptops, providing smooth images without tearing when gaming.

The sound quality here is quite good for a laptop speaker, with the two main speakers firing at the bottom but no additional tweeters under the screen. The sound is rich and loud on average, around 75-76 dB at the top. We didn’t notice any distortion at high levels, but the armrest vibrated at higher volumes. If this makes you uncomfortable, you can use a headset to play the game.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Asus approached RGB lighting with subtlety. The thin “under-glow” LED strip along the front edge and around the sides, combined with the individually backlit keyboard keys, offer highlights that are eye-catching but not overwhelming. All are customizable through the Aura Sync software in Asus Armoury Crate, giving me optimal control over my personal experience.

Another keyboard highlight is Asus’s inclusion of five programmable hotkeys, marked M1 to M5. They are set for volume adjustment, microphone toggle, and Armoury Crate shortcut by default. Despite its relatively large size, the ROG Strix G16 lacks a numeric keypad, which I found disappointing as I frequently use it for work.

Ports

In terms of connectivity, the right side of the ROG Strix G16 houses only two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports, while the left side features a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C port, GbE port, HDMI 2.1, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a proprietary charging port. I appreciate this distribution as it offers balance and convenience for using a mouse or other peripherals. Large ventilation holes on both sides and the rear aid in effective heat dissipation and add to the design’s overall “cool” factor.

Webcam

The 720p webcam of the Asus ROG Strix G16 might not be its most impressive feature. In a world where online meetings and streaming are increasingly important, the 720p resolution may feel outdated and inadequate for users needing higher image quality. However, it remains sufficient for basic video calls and daily tasks.

Battery Life

Regarding battery life, the ROG Strix G16 impresses with its long-lasting performance, a major plus for a gaming laptop. Under normal usage conditions, it can last about 6 hours, a respectable result compared to many segment rivals. However, battery life can decrease significantly during heavy tasks like gaming or running resource-intensive applications.

Conclusion

The Asus ROG Strix G16, with its perfect blend of superior performance, attractive design, and valuable features, has established itself as a strong contender in the modern gaming laptop world. While the 720p webcam might not meet the digital era’s needs, and the screen resolution isn’t the highest, these aspects don’t overshadow its other strengths. The highlight of the Asus G16 is its ability to deliver smooth gaming experiences with top-tier performance, impressive battery life, and robust build quality. Whether you’re a passionate gamer or a professional user, the Asus ROG Strix G16 is ready to meet all demands with its outstanding capabilities. It’s a worthy consideration for a powerful and versatile gaming laptop.
